Who can become an Independent Custody Visitor?

You don’t need any formal qualifications to become an ICV as we will give you all the training you need to carry out your role.

However you:

  • must be over 18
  • may have your application appraised if there appears to be a potential conflict of interest if you work in other areas of the criminal justice system, such as a solicitor or member of the probation service
  • must not be a justice of the peace, serving police officer or civilian employee or a member of staff from the police authority
  • always work as a volunteer and only receive out of pocket expenses incurred while carrying out your role.
