The Police Authority’s primary role is to maintain the efficiency and effectiveness of the local police force. The Authority ensures that the local force keeps improving its service and delivers the highest standards of policing to local people.

The Authority consults and engages with local people and ensures that their views are reflected in the nature and style of local policing.

Partnership working is very important to the Authority. Close collaborative working is undertaken with the chief constable, local authorities and other stakeholders to reduce crime and disorder and the fear of crime, whilst promoting equality and diversity.

This involves building trust and confidence in the force and the services it provides amongst local communities.

Police authorities also set the force budget and decide how much money to raise towards the cost of policing through the local council tax.
